How Nara Is Reimagining Food and Agriculture — The Story Behind the Persimmon Tree NFT
──The 'Persimmon Tree NFT' was launched in September 2025. Can you tell us what sparked this project?
Yoshito Maruoka (hereafter, Maruoka): To set the stage for our discussion, it's important to note that Nara Prefecture has established an ordinance to build a 'regional digital society'. Starting with the resolution of local issues, the basic philosophy is to 'realize the happiness of the residents and aim for the sustainable development of the region'. Based on this philosophy, we formulated the 'Nara Digital Strategy'.
One of the main themes is 'enhancing the profitability and vitality of food and agriculture', and we are working on building new relationships between producers and consumers. With the goal of 'discovering the bearers of Nara's future vitality', we launched the 'NFT project that supports Nara's food and agriculture'. We have set up a membership-based online platform, and registered members who purchase NFTs are invited to visit Nara for agricultural experiences.
