It has been discovered that the Ethereum (ETH) mainnet did not finalize blocks that were temporarily verified.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the 12th (Japan time), and finalization was halted for about 30 minutes.
It has now been restored, and Ethereum core developers say they are investigating the cause. Some say that a temporary decrease in the participation rate of validators may be the cause.
Finalization verifies transactions and confirms that a block is correct, preventing its contents from being changed thereafter.
If finalization is not completed, it is theoretically possible to make double payments or tamper with transactions, which means that the risk of fraud within the Ethereum network has increased.
Although a glitch occurred that prevented finalization from being completed, transactions and block generation themselves were still taking place. It has also been pointed out that the functionality of the entire Ethereum network was maintained because transactions were verified using various software.
According to Diversfy Now, if the occupancy rate of a specific software falls below 33%, it is highly likely that finalization outages like this one will be prevented.
In other words, the robustness of the network will increase if verification is performed by a variety of software, rather than relying on a few.
