What is AI buying? Insights from 200 million ‘x402’ transactions—revealing the reality behind $0.007 search queries.
目次
  1. $0.007 per search
  2. x402 incorporates payments into web communications.
  3. "Approximately 200 million" does not refer to the number of AI-driven shopping transactions.
  4. A single wallet had made 13.2 million payments.
  5. AI-driven payments might just change the way services are sold.

On September 30, 2026, Cloudflare launched a closed beta for its "Monetization Gateway." This system allows for the setting of fees for access to websites, APIs, MCP (Model Context Protocol) tools, and datasets, enabling software—such as AI agents—to make payments instantly upon accessing these resources. On the same day, Cloudflare also released a beta for "Machine Payments" within its AI Gateway, which allows for inference requests to supported models to be paid for directly from a stablecoin wallet.

Prior to this, on September 9, 2026, TRM Labs reported that, since May 2025, payments processed via known "x402" facilitators across the Base, Solana, and Polygon blockchains have reached approximately 198.9 million transactions, totaling roughly $52.7 million.

When we think of human-initiated payments, we typically envision online shopping or purchases made at physical retail stores. However, an examination of the AI-driven payments facilitated by the x402 protocol reveals something quite different. In this context, the items being purchased are individual, discrete operations—such as performing a single web search, retrieving a specific stock market signal, generating a PDF, or invoking an AI model—that were previously bundled behind API keys or subscription-based billing models. Here, these individual "operations" have become the fundamental units of payment.

$0.007 per search

Exa, a search service designed for AI, serves as a clear example. In a use case shared by Coinbase on April 7, 2026, an AI agent requests a search from Exa and receives a "402 Payment Required" response. This response specifies a cost of $0.007, the required network, and the payment destination. The AI then makes a payment in USDC and resubmits the request to obtain the search results.

A similar approach was highlighted by Cloudflare on September 30, 2026. Services such as Ceramic.ai (web search for AI), Stocktwits (market signals like sentiment and post volume for specific stocks), and API2PDF (conversion of HTML or Office documents into PDFs) operate on a per-request basis. Regarding API2PDF, Cloudflare notes that, depending on the task, it is possible to pay less than one cent per operation to a specialized API.

It is unlikely that a human would consciously decide to pay $0.007 for a single, specific search. An AI, however, can make a payment precisely when a search is needed during the course of an investigation—and subsequently move on to a different data service or an entirely separate inference model. If multiple services are utilized to complete a single task, numerous individual payments may occur behind the scenes, all in the service of what a human perceives as one unified job. Coinbase also cites Exa’s support for the "x402" protocol as an example where services—such as searches or page retrievals—are purchased only at the exact moment they are required.
