With the dawn of 2026, the convergence of social media and finance is accelerating. This week, Elon Musk's X social networking platform, X, attracted significant attention with its announcement of two new features: "Starterpacks" and "Smart Cashtags." What does this move by a major social networking site mean? We explore its background and aims.
Starterpacks is a curated account recommendation feature for new users. Over several months, leading contributors from various fields and countries around the world were selected and listed in over 1,000 categories. New users can select topics of interest from these lists and instantly follow leading accounts in each field, including cryptocurrencies.
In addition to cryptocurrencies, there are also several packs specifically targeted at areas related to "Crypto Twitter (CT)," such as meme coins and software developers. This suggests an intention to create a more healthy account discovery experience, particularly in the cryptocurrency space, where spam posts have been rampant.
Smart Cashtags, on the other hand, is a feature that allows users to access real-time information related to the ticker symbols of stocks, cryptocurrencies, and other assets mentioned in a post via links. By entering a stock code followed by a dollar sign ($), a list of candidate assets will be displayed, from which users can select the desired asset. Once the post is published, the ticker will become clickable, allowing users to view the asset's price chart and related posts on a single screen in their timeline.
Product Director Nikita Beer stated that "hundreds of billions of dollars are being moved based on the information read on X," and outlined plans to further enhance the platform's presence as an information platform. Many users already use X to obtain cryptocurrency-related information, and this is a great way to improve the user experience by providing a more intuitive interface between information and finance.
