Looking for hints about what a leader should be, I read Akira Nagao's Space Brothers: We Don't Need "Perfect Leaders" Anymore.
I used to believe a leader always had to stand at the front, pull everyone along, and be perfect. This book broke that image of leadership for me, in the best way.
The leader it describes is like the main character, Mutta Nanba, who keeps asking the people around him, "What do you think?" and brings out the best in each of them.
Instead of pulling others along with exceptional talent, this kind of leader moves the team forward while being honest about their own weaknesses. It was a real eye-opener to learn that a "supportive, facilitative" style of leadership exists too. Just as the Japanese saying goes, "ten people, ten colors," I think leaders come in many different shapes as well.
