Leading cryptocurrency exchange Binance announced on the 30th that the estimated total loss from a security incident occurring the same day amounts to approximately $6.3 billion (about 1 trillion yen).
Previously, Connor Grogan from Coinbase had estimated the losses at a maximum of $5.8 billion (about 916 billion yen), but Binance's initial investigation suggests a larger scale.
According to Binance, there is a possibility that the laptop of a DevOps engineer responsible for system development and operations was compromised. The attackers are believed to have used this as a foothold to access the service environment and send unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
However, there is no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked.
Additionally, it was revealed that approximately $3 billion (about 473.7 billion yen) worth of assets have been frozen on the blockchain in collaboration with related companies. The frozen amount has increased from the previously announced $2.54 billion (about 400 billion yen), and further collaboration for freezing is expected.
Regarding the losses, Binance has indicated a policy to fully compensate using the user protection fund "SAFU" and company funds, reiterating that user assets are safe.
Binance is working closely with law enforcement to revoke the authorization of affected addresses and is advancing efforts to identify the attackers and trace and recover the funds.
Currently, deposits and withdrawals on Binance remain suspended for safety verification, with no timeline provided for resumption.
Binance plans to release a technical investigation report upon completion of the investigation and verification, and will update the Proof of Reserves after recovery measures are finalized.
If the loss amount is confirmed, it would exceed four times the approximately $1.5 billion (about 237 billion yen) outflow that occurred at Bybit in February 2025, marking the largest unauthorized cryptocurrency outflow incident to date. The Bybit incident was attributed to a breach of a device belonging to a developer at Safe, a wallet service provider.
In the market, BNB temporarily fell over 8% within 24 hours, but by around 11:30 AM Japan time on the 30th, the decline had narrowed to the 4% range.
