On the 17th, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, revealed in an interview with Fox News that he will develop his own AI, a large-scale language model called "TruthGPT," to compete with the conversational AI "ChatGPT."
Musk has warned about AI, saying, "It will have a devastating impact on the survival of the entire human race. All development of artificial intelligence technology should be halted for six months." He expressed particular concern about the latest version of ChatGPT, "GPT-4," developed by OpenAI.
In the interview, Musk said, "We will start developing AI to understand the nature of the universe." "AI that focuses on the nature of the universe is unlikely to destroy humanity. I think this is the best path for the survival of humanity, because we are an interesting part of the universe."
Musk has invited AI researchers from Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, to launch a startup to compete with OpenAI.
According to documents filed in Nevada, the startup's name is "X.AI Inc." The company was registered on the 9th of last month, with Musk as the sole director. Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk's asset management company, is also his secretary.
Although Musk has not disclosed details, he has assembled a team of AI researchers and engineers and is in talks with investors from Tesla and SpaceX about future investments.
Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and tried to acquire the company in 2018. However, the board of directors did not approve the deal, and Musk resigned as a director. It is believed that these past feuds are the background to Musk's request to stop AI development.
Musk's words and actions this time are contrary to his previous statements, but the intensifying movement surrounding the AI development race can also be said to have influenced him.
Microsoft announced "OpenGPT," Google has "Bard," and others such as Meta and Amazon have also announced their entry.
