[NEWS] Film magazine Kinema Junpo issues digital edition with NFT

"Kinema Junpo" is sold at "mov"

On the 19th, mov announced that it will sell the digital version of the movie magazine "Kinema Junpo" with NFT on the movie collectibles marketplace "mov".

Kinema Junpo, the world's oldest surviving movie magazine, was founded in 1919 (Taisho 8). In pursuit of bringing movie fans closer to movies, it was renewed for the August issue and is now published once a month.

According to the announcement, this is the first time in the world that a movie magazine will be sold with NFT. It will be sold exclusively by mov.

The digital version sold on mov will be issued with a digital certificate that proves the rights (viewing rights) held by the purchaser and the purchase record. By recording the publisher, Kinema Junpo, and the publication date, historical value can be maintained. In addition, attaching NFTs will also be a countermeasure against pirated versions such as copies of e-books.

Kinema Junpo's President and CEO, Koji Hoshino, said, "As we develop digitalization, we have been looking for ways to resonate with and utilize its characteristics." He also said that the guarantee of authenticity through NFTs will allow the company to fulfill its responsibility to readers while also encouraging the expansion of its services in the future.

Jason Wong, founder and CEO of mov, said, "By digitizing the highly valuable historical content that Kinema Junpo has cultivated for over 100 years, we hope to generate liquidity and provide new revenue opportunities."

NFTs issued by blockchain are beginning to be applied in a wide range of fields as a means of proving the authenticity of digital content, which was previously difficult. Until now, old books have been traded at relatively low prices in secondhand bookstores, but the application of NFTs may increase prices.

The cover of the commemorative first issue features Kamiki Furunosuke and Godzilla. It is a special feature on the much-talked-about Godzilla-1.0. It is priced at 1,320 yen and is compatible with smartphones and PCs.
