With the advent of blockchain games, people can now not only play games, but also enjoy new value experiences through tokens. In particular, Japan, as a so-called "content IP powerhouse" with some of the world's leading IP for anime and manga, is expected to be at the forefront of blockchain games.
Cases of major game companies entering the market are gradually being seen, and blockchain games that will finally lead Web 3.0 to mass adoption may finally appear, and full-scale competition may begin. In this situation, Oasys, a blockchain specialized for games, is making its presence known. Well-known companies are participating as validators, and there are already blockchain games being developed on Oasys. There are also cases of major companies adopting Oasys, mainly companies participating as validators. We asked Ryo Matsubara, who leads Oasys, about the mission that Oasys considers important.
What do you think about the current Web 3.0 field?
Ryo Matsubara (hereinafter, Matsubara): The appeal of Web 3.0 is that it converts all services into Fintech and creates overwhelming liquidity. The total trading volume of the Tokyo Stock Exchange's growth market is approximately 136.4 billion yen (as of August 2, 2024), while the daily trading volume of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance is approximately 3.58 trillion yen (as of August 5, 2024). On the other hand, the challenge is that the high liquidity means that the speculative aspect is overemphasized. In the first half of this year, there was a trickle-down inflow of funds from Bitcoin spot ETFs, and there was a one-sided focus on speculation in line with investment themes called "narratives," such as meme coins, AI, and DePin. However, in the second half, it also became a point of contention in the US presidential election, and regulations were clarified, so I think that practical use cases and innovation will be promoted in the future.
In addition, if you wait until the environment is ready before taking on the challenge, you will already have missed the chance, so I think it is very important to go out into the wilderness now and continue to work sincerely.
Our mission is to spread awareness of BCG among the general public
What kind of appeal do you want to deliver through your company's projects and services, and what do you want to accomplish?
Matsubara: We believe that our mission is to make blockchain games popular enough for the general public to use them.
As AI becomes more widespread and the number of jobs that humans have to do decreases, I hope that by spreading blockchain games into society, we can create a world where people can have fun and not distinguish between work and play.
Oasys is a project that was launched with the support of Japan's leading companies. In Japan, which has been slowly declining, we want to find hope by winning in the world with at least our strong games in a new field.
