What is the 'Reversal of Aging'? The Mystery of the Immortal Jellyfish

Summary

1. The Phenomenon of Biological Age Reversal

The immortal jellyfish (Turritopsis dohrnii), found in oceans worldwide, is a remarkable organism capable of reversing its aging process by reverting from an adult medusa back to its juvenile polyp stage. While observations have documented up to 14 consecutive rejuvenations, researchers point out that because the nervous system is completely reset during this process, any prior "memories" are highly unlikely to be retained.

2. Genetic Commonality and Medical Applications

An analysis by the Kazusa DNA Research Institute revealed that the immortal jellyfish shares approximately 50% of its genetic makeup with humans. Current research has advanced to the stage of expressing these "rejuvenation genes" within human cells. This breakthrough holds significant promise for future medical applications, particularly in skin and tissue regeneration.

3. Funding Deficits and Future Outlook

Although this research aims to unlock the mechanisms of theoretical immortality, its primary obstacles today are a severe shortage of both specialized researchers and funding. Because it is often not perceived as a science with immediate practical benefits for humans, securing capital remains difficult. Nevertheless, studies continue to push forward, exploring integration with other cutting-edge technologies—such as digital memory preservation—as well as contributions to disease treatment.

Are you familiar with the legend of Xu Fu that spans across East Asia? Around the 3rd century BC, Xu Fu was ordered by the First Emperor of Qin to search for the elixir of immortality, traveling across various parts of Asia. There are numerous tourist sites in Japan claiming Xu Fu's visit.

Immortality has been humanity's ultimate dream since ancient times. The fascination with eternal life and the fear of being unable to die are themes well-known worldwide, even without mentioning Osamu Tezuka's 'Phoenix.'

Despite the advancements in medical technology and the realistic research into future technologies like regenerative medicine and cryonics, discussions on immortality are often dismissed as fantasy. Given that aging is inevitable, does this mean that no matter how much we delay aging, we will ultimately suffer from its effects?

During my research, I stumbled upon information about a remarkable creature. Astonishingly, there exists a creature that reverts to its juvenile form after reaching maturity.

What exactly does this mean? Can this characteristic be applied to human immortality? I reached out to the Kazusa DNA Research Institute, which studies this creature, the Turritopsis jellyfish.

I spoke with Yoshinori Hasegawa, the head of the Genetic Structure Analysis Group at the institute, who is researching the Turritopsis jellyfish.

'The Turritopsis jellyfish is a small jellyfish, about 1 cm in length, inhabiting warm seas worldwide. Its basic lifestyle is similar to that of typical jellyfish, but as you discovered, it possesses the unique ability to rejuvenate,' explained Hasegawa.

According to Hasegawa, this rejuvenation is entirely different from normal reproduction, as the parent organism itself reverts to a juvenile state, a phenomenon he describes as the 'reversal of aging.' In studies, some individuals have been observed to rejuvenate 14 times consecutively. 'However, since the nervous system developed during growth is reset in the rejuvenation process, it is highly likely that memories are not retained,' he noted.

The Kazusa DNA Research Institute, which conducts research on the Turritopsis jellyfish, was established in 1994 and performs genome analysis on a wide range of organisms, including plants, microorganisms, and humans. It is particularly strong in 'large-scale DNA analysis technology' and plays a foundational role in supporting Japan's bio-research.
