Bitcoin Core, an open source software for Bitcoin, released its latest version, v26.0, on the 6th.
One of the developers, Luke Dash Jr., said on X (formerly Twitter) that "spam is being sent to the Bitcoin blockchain by exploiting a vulnerability in Bitcoin Core. However, the vulnerability has not yet been fixed and will finally be fixed in the next version, v27."
Spam attacks are continuing that exploit a vulnerability that allows Bitcoin miners to circumvent the additional data quantity limit in Bitcoin transactions. However, if the vulnerability is fixed in v27, Bitcoin Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens may no longer be available.
Luke said that since 2013, Bitcoin Core has been able to limit the size of extra data in transactions, but that inscriptions by these tokens circumvent the limit by obfuscating the data as program code, but added that this bug was fixed in v25.1.
Possibility of losing the ability to issue Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens
According to Luke, Bitcoin Core is vulnerable even in v26, and he explained that he would like to address this vulnerability before the release of v27 next year. It is still unclear whether this proposal will be realized, but he said that if the vulnerability is fixed, the function to issue Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens will no longer be available.
In addition, Luke clarified the community's doubts about miners losing income if Ordinals and BRC-20 no longer exist. Bitcoin states that it operates under the agreement that the majority of miners are honest and will not harm the blockchain.
The Bitcoin community continues to criticize the ending of support for Ordinals and BRC20. Miners' profits had improved after Ordinals and BRC20 were introduced to the community.
