Debate erupts over the nature of Bitcoin

A fierce debate is brewing among developers over a proposal to lift restrictions on data storage in the virtual currency Bitcoin (BTC).

This includes the question of whether Bitcoin's mainnet should focus on simple functions such as remittance, or whether it should officially provide additional functions such as data storage.

The proposal at issue is "Removing the OP_RETURN restriction" by core developer Peter Todd. If approved, it will be possible to store much larger amounts of data, such as text and images, directly on the Bitcoin blockchain than is currently possible.
