A Payment Method Native to the Internet

On the 7th, the development division of Coinbase announced a new open-source payment protocol 'x402', which implements the HTTP 402 'Payment Required' status code that has existed in the blueprint of the internet for decades but was never utilized. This protocol allows for a practical payment layer where servers can request payment and clients (humans or AI agents) can respond using stablecoins like USDC.

The main objective of x402 is to remove barriers when AI agents autonomously access external APIs or context search protocols...
