Coinbase Customer Data Leak Leads to U.S. Department of Justice Investigation

Department of Justice Launches Investigation

According to a Bloomberg report on the 20th, the U.S. Department of Justice has initiated an investigation into a customer data leak at major cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase. Investigative authorities, including the criminal division in Washington, are delving into the details of this data breach. Last Thursday, Coinbase announced that hackers had bribed a customer support employee based in India to steal customer data. On May 11, the perpetrator group demanded a $20 million ransom through an anonymous email, attempting to cover up the incident. Meanwhile, the attackers did not access customer funds, private keys, or the login system, affecting less than 1% of all users.
