California Assembly Passes Bill to Accept Bitcoin Payments, Moves to Senate

The Case of California

On June 4th, the California State Assembly unanimously passed Bill AB1180, which enables the state government to accept payments in Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies. The bill has now moved to the Senate for deliberation and, if enacted, will be effective from July 1, 2026, to January 1, 2031.

The bill, introduced by Assemblymember Valencia, mandates the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation to establish regulations that facilitate payments in digital financial assets. The department is required to report on the number and value of cryptocurrency transactions processed, as well as the technical and regulatory challenges encountered, by January 1, 2028.
