BOJ Deputy Governor Points to Stablecoins as Potential Core of International Payments

On the 21st, Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Himiyano mentioned, 'Stablecoins could partially replace bank deposits and emerge as major players in the international payment system.'

This statement was made at the international conference 'GZERO Summit Japan 2025' held in Tokyo.

Stablecoins are digital currencies whose values are pegged to fiat currencies like the dollar or yen, enabling cross-border transfers to be completed in minutes. They are faster and cheaper than traditional bank transfers, which has led to their increased use in international settlements between companies.

Mr. Himiyano emphasized the need for regulatory authorities to intensify their efforts in response to changes in the financial system, including the advent of stablecoins.
