National Tax Agency Announces Audit Results, Cryptocurrency Transaction Back Taxes Hit 4.6 Billion Yen

On November 11, the National Tax Agency released the audit results for income and consumption taxes for the fiscal year 2024-2025 (July 2024 to June 2025). Field audits (special and general) targeting individuals trading in cryptocurrency and similar assets were conducted in 613 cases, with the total amount of back taxes reaching 4.6 billion yen. This represents a 31.4% increase from the 3.5 billion yen of the previous fiscal year, with the number of cases also rising by 14.6% from 535 cases. Comparison of amounts per case (Cryptocurrency vs. Overall Average): In the audits concerning cryptocurrency transactions, both the back taxes and unreported income per case significantly exceeded those of the overall income tax field audits.
