Nasdaq Proposes 23-Hour Trading Framework, Influenced by Cryptocurrency Trading Model

Set for Implementation in Late 2026

Nasdaq, the second-largest stock exchange in the United States, submitted a rule change proposal to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on the 15th, seeking to extend the trading hours for stocks and Exchange-Traded Products (ETPs) from the current 16 hours a day to 23 hours. Under the new trading regime, daytime trading would run from 4 AM to 8 PM Eastern Time, followed by a one-hour maintenance break, then resuming with nighttime trading from 9 PM to 4 AM. The trading week is scheduled to start at 9 PM on Sunday and conclude at 8 PM on Friday. Nasdaq aims to implement this by the second half of 2026, contingent upon SEC approval and the readiness of market infrastructure.
