Thai Central Bank to Regulate Digital Gold Trading and Strengthen USDT Oversight, Reports Say

Local Thai media reports that the Bank of Thailand is targeting the unregulated digital gold trading market as a major cause of baht volatility due to large-scale dollar sales from gold shops. To combat grey money, the central bank has mandated commercial banks to report large or suspicious cash transactions and has strengthened the management of exchange services and electronic wallets. The crackdown includes enhanced surveillance of cryptocurrency transactions involving stablecoins such as USDT. On December 8, at the KKP Year Ahead 2026 seminar, Governor Vitai Ratanakorn highlighted the unprecedented measures of tracking suspicious cash exchanges, regulating digital gold trading, and monitoring cryptocurrency transactions.
