U.S. SEC Significantly Eases Capital Regulations on Stablecoins

Accelerating Integration with Traditional Finance

On February 20, the SEC's Division of Trading and Markets released a new FAQ clarifying the treatment of payment stablecoins under capital regulations for broker-dealers.

The new FAQ allows broker-dealers to apply a 2% 'haircut' to their own account holdings of payment stablecoins when calculating net capital.

A 'haircut' refers to the risk discount rate applied when using assets as collateral or in capital calculations, with higher values indicating greater perceived risk of the asset...
