BIS Formally Recognizes Structural Flaws in Stablecoins

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) officially concluded in its 2026 annual economic report published on the 28th that the current design of stablecoins 'does not meet the core requirements necessary to ensure trust as a currency.' Pablo Hernandez de Cos, President of the BIS, stated that 'integrating digital innovation into existing financial infrastructure can shape the future of money and financial systems without compromising trust...'
