On 31st DMM Bitcoin announced that it had discovered an unauthorized leak of Bitcoin (BTC).
According to the announcement, the amount of Bitcoin that was illegally leaked was 4,502.9 BTC, which is equivalent to approximately 48.2 billion yen in Japanese yen. The unauthorized leak was discovered around 13:26 on Friday, May 31, 2024.
As a result, the use of the following services will be restricted.
- Screening for new account openings
- Processing of cryptocurrency withdrawals
- Suspension of buying orders for spot trading (only sales accepted)
- Suspension of new open positions for leveraged trading (only settlement orders accepted)
The company said it will announce the resumption of services at a later date.
In addition, it explained that it will procure the equivalent of the leaked amount of Bitcoin held by customers with the support of its group companies and guarantee the full amount.
In Japan, it is mandatory to manage customer assets and company-owned assets separately. In addition, as a general rule, it is also necessary to manage them in a cold wallet. Therefore, it is possible that the majority of the Bitcoin stored in the cold wallet was illegally leaked.
In Japan, Coincheck also experienced a fraudulent leak of 58 billion yen (at the exchange rate at the time), but this is the second largest case.
