On the 24th, ethOS, a project developing a smartphone OS based on the cryptocurrency Ethereum (ETH), announced that it will begin general sales of smartphones with the OS installed this fall.
In addition, shipments to customers who have made pre-orders will also be made at the same time. At present, pre-order shipments seem to be limited to US residents only. In the future, sales channels are expected to expand to Europe and other areas.
According to the official announcement, this smartphone can be reserved by issuing a specific NFT. The first batch has already been issued.
There is also information that counterfeit versions of the NFT required for pre-ordering this smartphone are currently being sold on the NFT marketplace OpenSea, so caution is required.
The smartphone being sold this time is the Google Pixel 7a with ethOS pre-installed. Development of ethOS itself began in 2021.
This smartphone comes standard with a wallet, and is said to support decentralized messaging and payment functions, as well as ENS (Ethereum Name Service), which allows you to name Ethereum addresses.
This time, an Ethereum OS smartphone will be released, but in April of this year, the Solana (SOL)-based "Saga" was released.
Saga, provided by Solana Mobile, a subsidiary of Solana Labs, is equipped with the Android OS and was developed in partnership with smartphone developer OSOM Products. The price was $1,000 (approximately 146,000 yen), but it was reduced to $599 (approximately 87,500 yen) on the 10th of this month.
Saga's unique feature is that it allows users to acquire dozens of dApps (decentralized apps) from the dedicated "Solana dApp Store." At the time of release, the Solana blockchain-based NFT marketplace Magic Eden and other apps were available for download.
Saga is currently on sale in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe.
