Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami announced on the 14th that he will run for the Republican nomination for the 2024 US presidential election.
Suarez is known as a supporter of cryptocurrencies and has stated his intention to receive his entire salary in Bitcoin (BTC). He also revealed plans to attract mining companies to Miami and has been working on utilizing cryptocurrencies.
There are already more than 10 major candidates in the Republican Party, and Suarez will be the first Latin American candidate. With other leading candidates such as former President Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, he aims to solidify support mainly from Latin Americans like himself.
In addition, Suarez was negative about supporting Trump in the last presidential election, and was also critical of DeSantis over his response to the new coronavirus. Therefore, it is expected that he will also aim to capture votes by being a receptacle for critics of both parties.
Currently, the environment surrounding cryptocurrencies in the United States is becoming even tougher. In light of this situation, Republican lawmakers recently introduced a bill to remove SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) Chairman Gary Gensler and reorganize the organization.
However, given the current power dynamics in Congress, the bill will require the cooperation of Democrats to pass, and there is no clear outlook for this.
