On the 10th, NTT Docomo announced that it will launch a new company, "NTT Docomo Global," to expand its business globally across the group. NTT Docomo Global plans to develop a new communication network called "Open RAN," which does not rely on communication equipment from a specific company, and Web 3.0-related services.
NTT Docomo Global's President and CEO will be Hiroki Kuriyama, who was the vice president of NTT Docomo and was in charge of international business. In conjunction with the launch of NTT Docomo Global, the company announced that it had established "Global Business Planning Co., Ltd." on May 10. The company will change its name to NTT Docomo Global and begin operations on July 1.
In addition, the Docomo Group's international business is expected to be consolidated under NTT Docomo Global. NTT Digital, which is already engaged in Web 3.0 business in Japan, will also come under NTT Docomo Global.
The background to this is that domestic telecommunications business in the mobile phone field has reached a plateau. Docomo previously invested in US telecommunications giant AT&T and an Indian telecommunications company, but later withdrew from these investments. Strengthening overseas business has been a long-standing management issue for expanding profits.
The aim of this announcement is to strengthen overseas business through NTT Docomo Global, using Southeast Asia and North America, regions where future growth is expected, as a foothold.
NTT Docomo's Moves in the Web 3.0 Field
NTT Docomo announced that it will invest 600 billion yen in Web 3.0 in November 2022. In addition, it has revealed that it will collaborate with Stake Technologies, which develops and operates the Japanese public chain Astar Network, and Accenture to provide infrastructure services such as blockchain and wallets.
NTT Digital, which was established after that, announced in July last year that it would collaborate with 13 companies, including Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank and Sanrio, and has been working with businesses in a variety of industries and sectors to develop systems, create use cases, and establish rules.
In March of this year, it began offering the digital wallet "scramberry WALLET." In April, it also partnered with FSL Group, which develops blockchain games such as STEPN and Gas Hero, to conduct a demonstration experiment, and Docomo's brand is becoming more active in the Web 3.0 field.
