On the 17th, former President Donald Trump mentioned at an election event in New Hampshire, where he is competing for the Republican nomination for the presidential election in November this year, that he would never allow the introduction of a CBDC (central bank digital currency).
According to a poll by Real Clear Politics, Trump is currently leading President Biden by 1.6 points, and there is a growing expectation that he will return to the presidency.
Regarding CBDC, Trump said, "Such a currency (CBDC) would be depositing funds with the federal government, the federal government, and they could steal them. And you who deposited it would not even know it was gone."
Trump also emphasized that by blocking the issuance of CBDC, he would protect the American people from "tyranny." "This is a dangerous threat to freedom, and I will stop it (CBDC) from coming to the United States," he vowed.
CBDC criticism continues in the United States
Trump's statement against CBDC is in line with other Republican candidates. Last year, Florida Governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis told voters that he would abolish CBDC if elected.
Vivek Ramaswamy, another Republican presidential candidate, has made a similar pledge. On the 15th, Ramaswamy withdrew from the race following the results of the party election. Ramaswamy has shown a positive attitude toward crypto assets, and has publicly stated that he will improve crypto asset regulations and ensure the independence and autonomy of the industry.
Republican lawmakers have criticized the Biden administration for pursuing research and study of CBDCs despite not agreeing to their introduction, let alone introducing them. The Biden administration has since called CBDCs "the most urgent" and indicated its support for their introduction. There is a strong view that this is in response to China's lead in the CBDC field.
At the Bitcoin 2023 conference held in Miami, Florida last year, former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard denounced CBDC as a "measure of financial control." "If we give control of our wallets to other people, they're controlling our freedom," she said.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz also announced a bill last March to halt the progress of CBDC to prevent financial surveillance. Cruz criticized, "The federal government does not have the authority to unilaterally create a central bank."
Turning point for Trump's NFT measures
Trump released his own NFT last year and was successful. He then began selling the third Trump NFT trading card, the Mugshot Edition, which was released in December last year. Although 100,000 units were issued, sales have not been good. In response to this, on the 19th, it was announced that new benefits would be given to buyers.
