The CLARITY Act’s Senate Passage and Macro Headwinds (May.16, 2026 | Column)

US Regulatory Clarity Advances Provide Support, But Rising Long-Term Yields and Geopolitical Risks Weigh on the Market

This week, the cryptocurrency market was largely driven by the prospects of passage for the "Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act" (H.R. 3,633), a landmark bill focused on US market structure reform. On May 14 (US time), reports that the CLARITY Act had cleared the Senate Banking Committee fueled growing optimism in the market regarding its eventual enactment.

The implied probability of the bill's passage surged on Polymarket, prompting a correlated rally in Bitcoin (BTC) prices. Achieving regulatory clarity in the United States has long been a critical theme for the crypto industry, and progress in these legislative deliberations served as a strong catalyst to bolster investor sentiment.

On the other hand, a sense of resistance at higher price levels became apparent heading into the weekend. Caution grew over stalled negotiations to end hostilities between the US and Iran, with geopolitical risks once again weighing on the market. Additionally, the 10-year US Treasury yield briefly hit 4.60%, marking a nearly one-year high. Rising US yields naturally diminish the relative investment appeal of BTC, which inherently yields no interest.

Consequently, the BTC market this week saw a tug-of-war between upward pressure from expectations around US regulatory clarity and downward pressure from geopolitical friction and surging long-term US interest rates.

While headlines surrounding the CLARITY Act are heavily prioritized as short-term price drivers, macro factors such as the interest rate environment and Middle East tensions remain impossible to ignore. Looking ahead to next week and beyond, the progress of congressional deliberations in the US and the trajectory of long-term yields will likely remain the pivotal factors determining the broader direction of the crypto asset market.
