U.S. Department of Justice Charges Venezuelan National in Alleged $1 Billion Money Laundering Scheme Involving Cryptocurrencies

The Eastern District of Virginia's U.S. Department of Justice announced on January 9th that Jorge Figueira, a Venezuelan national, has been criminally charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering amounting to approximately $1 billion.

The suspect allegedly used bank accounts, cryptocurrency exchange accounts, private wallets, and shell companies to launder illicit funds within and outside the United States.

The federal prosecutor handling the case stated that criminal activities of this magnitude pose a serious threat to the financial system and public safety. He emphasized that individuals moving billions of dollars of illicit funds are identified and prosecuted under federal law.
