[NEWS] Ethereum's next major upgrade "Denkun" implemented on second testnet

Next up: the third testnet, Holesky

Ethereum's next major upgrade, Dencun, was implemented and launched on the 31st on Sepolia, the second of three test networks.

Parithosh Jayanthi, a DevOps engineer at the Ethereum Foundation, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that "BLOBs are currently flowing on Sepolia. The state of the testnet fork is optimal."

Regarding Ethereum's upgrade, Dencun was implemented on the first test network, Goerli, in early January. A bug occurred on Goerli that prevented the upgrade from completing, causing a delay of about four hours before it went live.

The implementation of Dencun on the third test network, Holesky, is scheduled for the 7th of this month. After the successful implementation on Holesky, Ethereum plans to set a date for the implementation of Dencun on the mainnet.

Upgrade expected to significantly reduce fees

As outlined in the Ethereum Foundation's official announcement, Denkun includes significant changes to Ethereum's consensus and execution layers.

Particularly noteworthy is a feature called "Proto-Dansharding," which will have a significant impact on transaction fees from Ethereum's Layer 2. This aims to significantly reduce transaction fees (gas fees) and greatly improve scalability by introducing a data compression mechanism called "blobs."

Data stored in blobs is inaccessible from the EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) and is deleted after a certain period of time. This is expected to enable efficient data transfer and significantly reduce transaction fees.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said in a community statement that "because blobs are very large (about 125KB), they can be much cheaper than a similar amount of phone call data."

With the implementation of proto-Dunk Sharding, Ethereum's presence may increase even further.

Galaxy Digital researcher Christine Kim said on X, "Based on the smooth progress on Sepolia today, I would say that the probability of Denkun being activated on the mainnet in March has increased to 60% to 70%." "If the upgrade on Holeskey next week goes smoothly, the odds will only increase."
