"Bitcoin Prefecture" announced
On June 27th, Mercari (Japanese e-commerce company) released an infographic looking back on trends and tendencies in commemoration of the 11th anniversary of the launch of the service. In it, the prefectures with the highest average transaction amount for Mercari's "Bitcoin trading service" were announced in a ranking format.
According to the announcement, Tokushima Prefecture had the highest average transaction amount. It was followed by Tokyo, Shiga Prefecture, Shimane Prefecture, and Aomori Prefecture.
In response to the results, Mercari said, "We found that customers in various regions across the country are using our service.”
According to Sony Life's "47 Prefectures' Lifestyle Awareness Survey2023," Tokushima Prefecture is ranked first in the nation for "prefectures that are good at managing their household finances." Taking these results into account, it seems that Mercari may be a good fit for Tokushima residents.
In addition, the infographic also reveals Mercari's transaction share by category and listing categories by generation.
The most common reason for using Mercari was "to buy things I want as cheaply as possible," which was answered by 86% of survey respondents. Next was "to give away things I no longer use to people who want them" at 76%, and "to avoid having unnecessary things/to reduce the amount of things I own" at 67%.
28% of respondents answered "to use the money I get from selling things for savings or asset management."
Promising Mercari's Bitcoin trading service
Mercari began offering Bitcoin trading services through its subsidiary Mercari Coin in March last year. Last month, it announced that the number of accounts had exceeded 2.2 million.
According to monthly cryptocurrency trading data from the Japan Cryptocurrency Exchange Association (JVCEA), the number of new accounts opened in the year from the end of March 2023 to the end of March 2024 was approximately 3.1 million.
On the other hand, the number of cryptocurrency accounts opened on Mercari during the same period was approximately 1.91 million, which is more than half of the total, and recorded a 61.5% occupancy rate.
The majority of Mercari users have never traded crypto assets (virtual currencies) before, but the increase in practical scenarios, such as the introduction of Bitcoin payments, seems to be the main reason for using the company's services.
