On the 22nd, President Trump announced that he had exercised his presidential authority to grant a "full and unconditional" pardon to Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road.
Ulbricht operated Silk Road under the pseudonym "Dread Pirate Roberts" from 2011 to 2013. The platform facilitated transactions involving illegal drugs and counterfeit goods, primarily conducted through Bitcoin, with total trade reportedly exceeding $200 million.
In February 2015, the U.S. Department of Justice described Silk Road as "the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplace on the internet at the time," sentencing Ulbricht to life imprisonment for crimes including drug trafficking, money laundering, and hacking.
Trump made the announcement through his social media platform, Truth Social. In a phone call with Ulbricht's mother, he criticized the legal officials involved in Ulbricht’s conviction, emphasizing that "his punishment was excessive for the crimes committed."
The pardon, described as "full and unconditional," also fulfilled a promise Trump made to libertarian supporters during his May 2024 presidential campaign.
