X to become fully paid "$2 per month" Elon Musk's ideas and the true purpose of the "X Evolution Plan"

X Evolution Project

Recently, there have been a series of reports that businessman Elon Musk is considering making X (formerly Twitter) a paid service. However, it seems that the idea of making X a paid service had been on the table since immediately after the company acquired Twitter.

According to Musk's autobiography "Elon Musk," written by Walter Isaacson, former editor-in-chief of TIME and famous author of the global bestseller "Steve Jobs," the paid plan for X was in the cards from the beginning.

"How about a $2 monthly charge?"

The aim of this is to prevent fraud by fake accounts, spam accounts, and "bots." In addition, X has more than 500 million monthly users, and points out that 100 to 200 million posts are made per day. It is said that making the service paid could also prevent harmful posts such as hate speech.

October 30th incident

Musk is trying to change Twitter's revenue direction from the current advertising-based approach.

He initially thought of Twitter as the same as other technology companies like Tesla and SpaceX. However, Twitter relies on advertising for revenue, and there are advertisers.

Advertisers hate hate speech and discrimination. In fact, Musk has sent a letter to advertisers, whose numbers have drastically decreased since the acquisition, promising them that they can "say whatever they want and not have to take responsibility for it -- I will not turn Twitter into a hellish place where anything goes."

Shortly after that, on October 30th, Musk caused a commotion.

An incident occurred in which Paul Pelosi, the husband of Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and a leading figure, was attacked with a hammer while sleeping at home. At that time, Musk introduced an article from a right-wing conspiracy theory site that speculated that "it may be related to male prostitutes." He tweeted, "Maybe there's more to it than meets the eye."

Musk intuitively understands engineering, but human emotions are difficult to deal with because of the way his brain is wired. He doesn't understand that that's where the difficulty of acquiring Twitter comes in. He doesn't understand the emotions of advertisers. Musk doesn't understand, and doesn't want to understand, that Twitter is actually an advertising medium based on human emotions and relationships.

The tweet to Paul Pelosi caused controversy, and Musk had to fly to New York to discuss a contingency plan with the advertising sales team and work to reassure advertisers and their agents. In fact, Musk flew to New York and arrived at 3 a.m. the next day.

Musk seemed to be furious from start to finish after that. "We've been under attack ever since the acquisition was made public in April. Activists are putting pressure on us not to sign advertising contracts," he said.

He added, "We want Twitter to be something that will interest a wide range of people, such as a billion people, one day. That's why safety is important. If people see a barrage of hate speech or are attacked, they'll stop using the platform."

Regarding the Paul Pelosi incident, he brazenly stated, "I am just me. My Twitter account is an extension of who I am as a person. And as a person, I tweet stupid things and make mistakes." He was so blunt that he didn't apologize, leaving those involved dumbfounded.

The next day, many Twitter executives, who are trusted by the advertising industry, resigned. As a result, many brands and advertising agencies announced that they would withdraw Twitter advertising for the time being. Monthly sales fell by 80%. However, Musk was furious and said he would not allow himself to succumb to such pressure.

Musk often goes into "whimsical mode" or "insensitive mode," but occasionally goes into "devil mode." He is exposed to the cold anger emanating from his jet-black persona, as if possessed by something.

"Twitter is a good thing. Its very existence is ethical. They are behaving unethically," he said, adding that he believed pressuring advertisers to pull their ads was extortion and ordered the freezing of accounts that tweeted such things.

The collapse of Twitter is a prelude to the all-purpose app "X"

Twitter's advertising revenue model is collapsing, but the company is planning a future vision that is far removed from its current revenue style.

The company's acquisition of Twitter and renaming it X is a stepping stone to its original vision of making Twitter an all-purpose app.

"By 2028, we will increase revenue five-fold to $26 billion. We will reduce our dependence on advertising from the current 90% to 45%. New sources of revenue will be subscription fees and data license fees collected from users. We will give Twitter a small payment function for content such as newspaper articles, just like PayPal and WeChat, and generate revenue from that." Musk has set out a plan to do so.

Musk has taken up the Chinese super app "WeChat" as a model for something. "We need to be on par with WeChat in terms of functionality. The most important thing is to allow content creators to receive payments on Twitter," he has told investment banks and others.

Online payment systems have the advantage of being able to verify users. If credit information is secured, it can be confirmed whether the user is really a human or not. If successful, it will have a major impact on the entire Internet. It can become a platform for identity verification and provide a new way for everyone from large media companies to individuals to be paid for the content they create.

On August 8, X began a service where users who subscribe to "X Premium" can receive advertising revenue sharing if they qualify (Creator Advertising Revenue Sharing Program). The compensation structure has not been disclosed, but it has been revealed that if a user has a million followers, they are paid hundreds of thousands of yen.

This is also part of X's monetization. In the future, they are considering developing it as a platform for user-generated content such as music, videos, stories, and art. Musk has named "Substack" as a rival to X.

When Musk acquired Twitter, he said, "Congratulations! I can finally create the X.com that I wanted to create a long time ago. With Twitter as the catalyst!" This is the realization of what I dreamed of at X.com 24 years ago, namely, the combination of a financial platform and a social network.

Musk's vision of X is the ultimate "playground"

For Musk, Twitter - X - is a place where his heart yearns. It is the ultimate playground.

As a child, Musk's playground was a place where he was bullied, punched and kicked. He didn't have the emotional dexterity to handle children's gatherings, and the pain penetrated to the marrow of his bones, which made him overreact to small things, but at the same time, it was this experience that enabled him to face the world. He always fought with all his might until the end.

Whenever he feels defeated, cornered or bullied, whether online or in real life, his heart goes back to the painful place where he was scolded by his father and bullied by his classmates. The day has finally come when he can take that playground into his hands. There is no doubt that Musk will make X, his playground, the best place.
