Tokenization and the Accelerating Growth of DeFi

On the 24th, Ripple announced its management's predictions for crypto assets in 2025. In it, it described 2025 as "a year of maturity and momentum."

The report looked back on 2024 as "a transformational year for crypto assets," noting that the industry has made great strides in institutional adoption, regulatory clarification, and technological evolution. It also stated that the industry is on the brink of unprecedented adoption and growth, from new asset classes and regulatory developments for crypto assets to continued growth in tokenization.

Amid this, Ripple predicts that adoption of blockchain technology by institutional investors and companies will accelerate. Markus Infanger, senior vice president of XRPL (XRP Ledger), said, "Market demand for improved operational efficiency and connectivity will lead to increased use of blockchain by institutional investors," predicting that adoption of blockchain and crypto assets by major companies and others will accelerate further this year.

Monica Long, president of Ripple, also emphasized that "tokenization and DeFi will evolve beyond crypto-specific applications and into institutional tools with a focus on RWA (real-world assets) tokenization and practical use cases by global financial institutions." The development of a blockchain-based trading environment will enable institutional investors to trade 24/7, improving liquidity in existing finance and providing access to a wider range of financial products.

In addition, Ripple CTO David Schwartz predicts that in addition to privacy and scalability, zero-knowledge proofs will accelerate the adoption of blockchain and DeFi by institutional investors. "Zero-knowledge proofs will maximize the potential of DeFi and allow institutional investors to participate in innovative technology to maintain confidentiality while meeting regulations, which is a critical requirement for widespread adoption," he said.

Listed companies are expected to allocate financial assets to crypto assets

Long predicts that this year, 20% of publicly listed companies and major banks will hold 2% of their financial assets in crypto assets. This is due to the year-to-year changes in approaches to inflation prevention and asset management. He also said that major companies such as Meta, Apple, Netflix, and Google will eventually follow suit.

This prediction also comes with the inauguration of the Trump administration, which has shown a positive attitude toward crypto assets. Ripple's Chief Legal Officer Stuart Alderoty said, "Crypto asset regulation will pave the way for institutional investors and others to adopt crypto assets," which will lead to market reflection.

He also predicts that the role of stablecoins will expand and new asset classes will emerge. Jack McDonald, senior vice president of stablecoins, noted that last year was a year of stablecoin growth and said, "2025 will see a noticeable shift to high-quality, regulated stablecoins." In light of these changing circumstances, Ripple argued that the stablecoin RLUSD, which it issued in December of last year, is ideal for use as a collateral asset.

In its report, Ripple concluded that "2025 is likely to be another defining year for crypto assets and blockchain." Furthermore, in light of the accelerating trend of tokenizing RWA and adopting crypto assets as financial assets, the report concluded that "as these trends converge, blockchain and crypto assets will become essential pillars of the global economy."
