Why was there a need for original electronic money created at the Expo?
The Osaka-Kansai Expo will be held in Yumeshima, Osaka, for half a year from April 13 to October 13, 2025. The theme of this expo is "Designing a future society where life shines."
As the name suggests, the expo is characterized by its awareness of sustainability in addition to the role that traditional expos have played of introducing and sharing new technologies and ideas for the future society. In addition, it has been announced that the concept will be a "test ground for the future society."
The best example of this is the adoption of a completely cashless payment system within the venue. Currency will no longer be accepted within the venue, and instead, more than 70 types of payment methods will be accepted, including credit cards, electronic money payments such as transportation IC cards, and even code payments.
This will be the largest experiment in Japan to verify the future society. However, due to the nature of the Expo, a wide range of people, both young and old, will visit. Some people may be exposed to the digital divide, as they do not currently use cashless payments.
Therefore, the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition has released an original payment app to lead such people to cashless payments. This app is the "EXPO 2025 DIGITAL WALLET" that we will introduce this time.
EXPO 2025 DIGITAL WALLET is the official cashless payment service of the Osaka-Kansai Expo and will be provided as a means of payment inside and outside the Expo site, but this wallet is more than just a payment tool.
It is equipped with various functions to make the experience of visitors more enjoyable and convenient, and blockchain technology is used behind the scenes of these functions. In other words, this wallet is a hybrid app that allows people with poor IT skills to experience cashless payment functions linked to banks, which is a prime example of the Web 2.0 area, while also allowing them to experience user services using the Web 3.0 area.
As mentioned at the beginning, the Osaka-Kansai Expo has the concept of a "test ground for the future society." It is a fact that Japan is slower than other countries in introducing cashless payments.
Therefore, it is safe to say that the primary aim of this app is to let visitors experience a completely cashless society at the venue and experience its convenience. In addition, it will provide a "connection function" using Soul Bound Tokens (SBT), an NFT that does not assume buying and selling, utilizing Web 3.0 technology.
This function will strengthen digital connections between visitors and between visitors and exhibitors, deepening the experience of the Expo.
Collaborations with local communities are also underway, such as a digital stamp rally in collaboration with Shiga Prefecture, and events that visitors can participate in before the Expo period have already begun.
In this way, the EXPO 2025 DIGITAL WALLET goes beyond being a simple means of payment and has become a digital platform that allows visitors to enjoy the Expo more actively. Why not use the EXPO 2025 DIGITAL WALLET to experience the cashless experience of the future at the Osaka-Kansai Expo?
